The Short Answer

Why the LLC Needs a Registered Agent

A Montana LLC must maintain a registered agent with a qualifying Montana address to receive official notices and service of process. We include registered agent service in Standard Registration and handle it with LLC formation and vehicle registration. The agent does not become you, driver, insurer, or substitute where the vehicle is kept address.

Role Boundaries

What the Registered Agent Does—and Does Not Do

The agent supports the entity’s legal presence, not your personal residency story.

01

Receives official notices

The agent is the designated contact for service of process and qualifying entity communications.

02

Supports entity continuity

Maintaining an agent is part of keeping the LLC’s state record in order.

03

Does not own the vehicle

The LLC is the intended owner; the registered agent is a service provider to the entity.

04

Is not a where the vehicle is kept address

Insurance and other records must state where the vehicle is actually kept and used.

Before You Start

Using a registered-agent address to misstate residence or vehicle location is not part of our service and can create insurance or compliance problems.

What You’ll Need

Records Connecting the Agent, LLC, and Vehicle

Each role should be clearly identified without substituting one address or party for another.

Ownership document

Title, manufacturer’s statement of origin, or other record establishing who owns the vehicle.

Purchase record

Bill of sale or purchase agreement identifying the vehicle, buyer, seller, and transaction.

Vehicle details

VIN, year, make, model, original MSRP if needed, and odometer disclosure if needed.

Insurance information

Coverage showing the real owner, drivers, use, and actual location where the vehicle is kept.

Identity and signer details

Current contact information and authority for the person signing entity and vehicle documents.

Lien or lease instructions

Written lender or lease-company approval and title directions when a lender or lessor controls the vehicle.

I expected a headache and got a checklist instead. Every form was pre-filled, every question answered the same day, and both cars were legal before my old registration even expired. The price was almost a footnote compared to how smooth it was.
