Registration Process

How the Montana LLC Vehicle Registration Process Works

A Montana LLC is formed to own the vehicle, MontanaPlate serves as its registered agent, your title and purchase documents are reviewed and filed with a Montana county, and plates are issued and shipped — typically within one to three business days once the file is complete.

This is the master process page for the MontanaPlate service. It describes what happens on our side, what we need from you at each stage, what governs the timeline, and what continues after the plates arrive.

Begin with an eligibility review, not a leap of faith

The order flow prices your vehicle line by line and puts your documents in front of a reviewer before anything is filed.

  • Five clear stages
  • Nothing filed until review clears

The five stages at a glance

  1. 1

    Eligibility review

    Stage 1

We look at residency, where the vehicle is kept and used, financing or lease status, and how the purchase is documented. If the Montana route is a poor fit, this is where we say so.

  2. 2

    Montana LLC formation

    Stage 2

The entity is filed with the Montana Secretary of State and becomes the intended owner of record. MontanaPlate is appointed as registered agent, satisfying the entity's in-state presence requirement.

  3. 3

    Document collection

    Stage 3

Title or MSO, purchase agreement, VIN details, identification, insurance and lienholder instructions. This stage is the one you control, and it sets the pace of the whole file.

  4. 4

    County filing

    Stage 4

The registration application is submitted with the supporting documents and applicable fees, and the selected plate design is requested.

  5. 5

    Plates and delivery

    Stage 5

Plates and registration documents are issued and shipped to you. Expedited processing is available for time-sensitive deliveries.

What actually drives the timeline

Montana processing is rarely the slow part. In our experience the three things that decide whether a file takes two days or two weeks are the selling dealer's title release, the lienholder's title department, and how complete the first document submission is.

Files that arrive complete on the first pass move fastest. Every round trip for a missing signature, an illegible title scan or an unclear VIN adds a day or more.

  • Dealer title or MSO release — controlled by the dealer, often the longest single wait
  • Lienholder cooperation on out-of-state lien recording, when financing exists
  • Completeness and legibility of your first document package
  • County office workload and business hours
  • Whether expedited 1-day processing was selected

Start the LLC while you wait

If your title is still in transit, form the entity first. That way the paperwork can be issued directly in the LLC's name and you skip a second transfer.

After the plates arrive

  • Keep the LLC in good standing, including its Montana annual report
  • Keep registered-agent service active — lapsing it puts the entity at risk
  • Renew the vehicle registration on its cycle; renewals are filed from your MontanaPlate account
  • Keep insurance aligned with the ownership structure and the real garaging address
  • Re-review the structure if you move, sell the vehicle, refinance, or change how the vehicle is used

Stage three is yours

Complete documents, faster plates

Most delays are document delays. Start the order, get your checklist, and send one clean package.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to travel to Montana?
No. Formation, registration and plate delivery are handled remotely, and MontanaPlate provides the in-state registered agent the entity requires.
How long does the whole process take?
Plates typically issue within one to three business days after a complete document package clears review, with expedited processing available. Waiting on a dealer title or a lienholder can extend that well beyond Montana's part of the work.
Can I add a second vehicle later?
Yes. Additional vehicles can be registered under an existing MontanaPlate LLC without forming a new entity, each with its own registration and plate fees.
What happens if my documents are incomplete?
We hold the file and tell you exactly what is missing rather than submitting something that will be rejected. Nothing is filed with the state until the package is complete.
